How Often Should You Clean Gutters in Houston?

The short answer
Most Houston homes should have gutters cleaned twice a year: once in May and once in December. Heavily treed lots often add a third visit in September or October. Homes with little overhead cover can sometimes stretch to once a year, timed for early May.
Why May and December
- May. Live oaks have finished shedding, oak and pine pollen has dropped, and you have a cleaning done before June 1, the start of hurricane season. Houston averages nearly 50 inches of rain a year, and the wettest month is typically June.
- December. Sweetgum, pecan, pine and most deciduous leaves are down. Cleaning then keeps the clutter out of winter rain and puts you in good shape for spring.
- September or October (optional). If you have a lot of pine, pecan or sweetgum overhead, a fall cleanup keeps gutters flowing through the late-season storms.
Other reasons to clean sooner
- After a named storm or strong wind. Branches and wet leaf mass are the usual clogs.
- Water spilling over the edge. If it overflows, the gutter or downspout is blocked now.
- Plants growing in the gutter. That is a sign debris has been sitting through multiple seasons.

Mosquitoes and standing water
Gutters that hold water are a common source of backyard mosquitoes. Harris County Public Health’s mosquito guidance tells residents to get rid of standing water around the home, and mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in about a week or so in warm weather.
