What causes tiger stripes and dark streaks
“Tiger stripes” are the vertical black streaks that run down the front face of white, tan and brown gutters. They are usually a mix of dirt and oxidized runoff from the roof, plus mildew and algae that thrive in Houston’s humidity (average relative humidity is near 75 percent). Once a film forms, it holds more dirt.
Chalky oxidation is a different problem. The finish on older aluminum gutters breaks down under Gulf Coast sun and leaves a dull, powdery surface that rubs off on your hand.
